CNN —A woman who left the United Kingdom to join ISIS at the age of 15 has lost her Court of Appeal challenge over the decision to remove her British citizenship. Shamima Begum flew to Syria in 2015 with two school friends to join the terror group. She told UK media she had two other children prior to that baby, who also died in Syria during infancy. He pointed to Begum being left stateless as grounds for this, something her lawyers have argued the British government has not fully considered the consequences of. Her lawyers have argued she was a victim of child trafficking, and that the decision was unlawful as it rendered her stateless.

A satirical tweet about the UK Home Office trying to repatriate 15-year-old British twins, who left the country to fight in Ukraine, is being taken seriously by people online. The post also includes an image from at least six years ago which has been digitally altered. Comments on the Facebook post suggest other people have taken it seriously, with one user replying: “Disgusting! However, the tweet stems from an account which appears to produce satirical content. ‘News’ articles on the account’s website, which was described as a satire website by Indy100 (here), also appear satirical in nature (www.bazake.co.uk/news).

An image of Shamima Begum, a British-born woman who went to Syria as a schoolgirl to join Islamic State, with her baby has been edited to replace her child with a sign saying: “Vote Labour to bring me home”. The manipulated image shows the 23-year-old clutching a cardboard sign which reads: “VOTE LABOUR TO BRING ME HOME”. However, the original photo shows Begum holding a baby wrapped in a blue-and-white-striped blanket (here). It was included in a June 11, 2022, Mail Online article (here), which says the child pictured was her late newborn son. The photo of Shamima Begum holding her baby was manipulated to include the sign urging people to vote for Britain’s Labour Party.

The British government took away Shamima Begum's citizenship on national security grounds in 2019, shortly after she was found in a detention camp in Syria. Begum would have to take the case directly to the Court of Appeal in London if she wishes to challenge Wednesday's decision, according to legislation which covers the tribunal. Begum, who is currently being held in the al-Roj detention camp in north-eastern Syria, argued that the Home Office failed to investigate whether she was a "child victim of trafficking". Judge Robert Jay found there was a "credible suspicion" that Begum was trafficked to Syria for the purposes of "sexual exploitation". But the judge ruled that a finding that Begum may have been trafficked was not enough for her appeal to succeed.

LONDON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - A British-born woman who went to Syria as a schoolgirl to join Islamic State lost her latest appeal against the removal of her UK citizenship, with a judge ruling her possible trafficking was insufficient grounds to reinstate her citizenship. The British government took away Shamima Begum's British citizenship on national security grounds in 2019, shortly after she was found in a detention camp in Syria. On Wednesday, the Special Immigration Appeals Commission – a specialist tribunal which hears appeals against decisions to remove citizenship on national security grounds – dismissed Begum's appeal. Her lawyers also argued that then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid had "pre-determined" that Begum's British citizenship should be revoked before he received any evidence from officials. But lawyers representing the Home Office said Begum's case was about national security rather than trafficking, arguing that Begum had aligned with IS and stayed in Syria for years.
